Soil fragmentation is crucial for crop establishment, since the size reduction of larger aggregates improves the conditions to germination and emergence of seedlings.

 

But it may jeopardizes soil environmental functions (e.g., carbon storage). Thus, cultivation activities must be optimized so that they promote only the necessary soil fragmentation.

 

Therefore we focused on developing a discrete element model that predicts soil aggregate rupture. This can be used to design tillage tools.
